We met up with indie-pop singer Rainsford in LA for a shoot and sit down interview all about her music, views on being an artist, and what she is up to next. Chatting with her we quickly found a whimsical and kind hearted soul who adores what she does. Her new song ‘Open Open’ is emotional, relatable to those familiar with heartbreak, and a beautiful song over-all. Get to know Rainsford better below, check out the editorial, and watch the video for ‘Open Open’.

Why music?

I feel like very few things in this world that genuinely make me very happy, that I love doing. For as long as I can remember i’ve loved to sing and i’ve loved to write music. So It’s like I think I pour myself into my music. When i’m writing I always have a lot going on in my heart and in my head. It’s me working through whatever i’m going through.

What does authenticity as an artist mean to you?

I think to be authentic, you create something that you genuinely like.. Which can be hard to do actually. I write songs all the time where I will listen back a day later and be like… I don’t like this. So I think it’s being able to be self critical in a way and selective about what you actually release while being honest with whatever you put into the song.

What does vulnerability as an artist mean to you?

I think i’m maybe too vulnerable with my song writing. I write my best music when I am really depressed. Especially when I am going through a breakup or something. It’s so all consuming for me, that I just put everything into my songs and my music. Maybe, to my own detriment because then I will write these really heartfelt, vulnerable, psychotic songs and send them to my ex. So I don’t know - I’m probably too vulnerable.

What was the inspiration behind ‘Open Open’?

Kind of what I was just talking about in a way, I’ve been going through a really traumatic breakup and I wrote this song a couple of months ago while in an initial rough patch. it’s basically an apology song. I was writing everything I was feeling and hoping we could work things out.

What inspires you?

Not to be a downer, but I am inspired by my life trauma. Obviously sometimes happy things too but I’ve always found it easier to write about things that hurt or that I feel intensely .

Favorite lyrics of your own?

Probably the lyrics in ‘Somewhere Else’. I was writing a lot about my dreams because I didn’t only want to write about sad stuff. So I was writing in my journal a lot when I would wake up since I was having a lot of visceral, strange dreams. So that song has a lot of bizarre imagery and it made for interesting lyrics in my opinion.

What’s next?

I’m putting out ‘Open Open’ and just shot the music video for that. So I am working on getting people excited about that song and video. I act as well, so I am actually leaving to go shoot in Atlanta for a bit soon. I also just moved and am going through a breakup so I am exhausted haha.
