Bel Elizabeth 💛 Lemon Drop

Bel Elizabeth has not had your typical career. It makes sense though considering she truly is something special! Bel is an R&B/ Pop artist, born and raised in Los Angeles. After speaking with her and shooting at her favorite horse stable - I think she's one of the good ones where living in this city left her with one hell of a halo above her head.

With a powerful and emotive voice since the get-go she has been a recording artist for over a decade and has the resume to show it from performances at the staple center, charting in iTunes top 10 international dance charts, and even having her voice ring through some of your favorite stores. However, she has been preparing for this the whole time.

Her new song Lemon Drop is drop-dead stunning with visuals to pair. The song itself is the perfect song to get hyped up to in the morning or before a night out. It’s a powerful anthem of what so many desire and has Hebrew lyrics mixed into the track. At the core, the song follows a Bonnie and Clyde-style relationship.

The video is a mix of witchy vibes and sexy visuals of Bel around Los Angeles California.  It references spirituality and manifesting the relationship of her dreams. Bel brings sex appeal and confidence through the lens with ease and warm energy. Directed, filmed, and edited by Alex Fowler and Lonewolf studios it is a wonderful beginning to Bree’s breakout as not just a vocalist but a fully formed and wild wind force of an artist.

Who are you and why music?

Ever since before I can remember I’ve loved performing for people any chance that I got. It was so much fun for me and I loved an audience of any size that I could get to listen to. I’ve always been the girl that loves to learn and absorbs her experiences like a sponge. Music was something that I picked up at 7 years old and never put down. There’s something powerful about evoking a deeper emotion in people that I became addicted to early on.

You have had quite the career already - can you talk about how that prepared you to be the artist you are today?

Yeah so at 9 years old I got offered a lifetime scholarship to the music school I was going to and I dedicated every weekend to going to classes and practicing performing. Sundays were optional open mic days and my mom would take me every single Sunday and sacrifice her weekends for me. After that, I spent so many hours developing myself as an artist, which included dance classes, studio sessions, writing, auditions….I did anything that I could get my hands on to help me be better at my craft. The work and the learning don’t stop. Honestly, even after 15 years I still have so much to learn. I think that drive, determination, and interest are what have allowed me to keep going and get better.

Favorite lyric of your own?

From Lemon Drop, It would definitely be my Hebrew pronoun reference which in English translates to “say little and do much”

What does empowerment mean to you?

I think empowerment is anything that makes someone feel stronger and more confident to do something that maybe hasn’t always been easy for them to do. I think overcoming fear can be the most powerful feeling in the world. I used to spend a lot of time when I was younger trying to mold myself into what was “mainstream” or popular at the time. I finally feel empowered to just be me.

What was the inspo behind “Lemon Drop”?

A lot of the songs I write are based on freestyle, so whatever concepts or melodies come to me when I hear music that makes me feel something. For Lemon Drop came up with the concept of a ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ type relationship and it kind of wrote itself from there. I tried to allude to the concept rather than just be direct. I find songs more fun and artistic that way.

What was the writing process of Lemon Drop?

So I take portions of the freestyle and use that as a base, I then fill in based on what the concept is and what feels good. I think I used to overthink writing, but there really are no rules or one way to do it. I always suggest to people to get out of their own heads and do what feels good and what feels authentic. Whatever is authentic to you is going to be your best work.

What does authenticity mean to you?

Wow, this word took me a long time to understand fully. People always tell you to be authentic, but I think for some it’s the “how” that’s the hard part. We live in a world where people are constantly telling us what is cool, what is normal, what is beautiful….

I think now we’re finally realizing that it’s cooler not to be like everybody else and it’s cooler not to sound like everybody else. I’ve spent a lot of time with myself to be able to scratch the surface of who I really am and it really does feel amazing when you can base your creativity on authenticity and not what everyone else is currently doing.

What does beauty mean to you?

I see beauty every day, in everyone and everything. I think beauty is all in how you look at it and it does sound cliché but there’s always beauty all around us. If you’re not in that headspace you just have to pay close attention to notice it.

How do visuals play a role in the story of your music? What is the thought process you go through while coming up with what you want?

Visuals play a huge role to me! I’m definitely a visual person and I try to explain the deeper concept of my music through the visuals. Over the years of practice my brain automatically comes up with all these creative images, and it was just a matter of breaking it down and picking what works and what can be executed well.

We shot with horses, do you have a background riding? What do they bring into your life?

So ever since I was little I’ve been obsessed with horses. Every time I would get the chance to be around a horse I would take it! They just have this quality about them that makes me feel extremely calm and even more appreciative of the moment. Even though I really ate dirt when they tried to shoot me riding bareback. LOL

What’s your zodiac sign?

FIRE Sagittarius!

How do you lift yourself up when you're having a hard day?

When I’m having a hard day I like the feeling of being home and I’ll pick a book out of my library that I know cheers up my spirit. I also like to work out or go for a run if it’s aggression that I need to get out, or I’ll open up my calm app and do a meditation to ground me.

Favorite smell, color, and quote?

Ohh my favorite smell is fall candles. There’s nothing like walking into a room with a cinnamon or s’mores candle that’s been burning. My favorite color is turquoise because I’ve always been mesmerized by it and also felt connected because it’s my birthstone. There’s a quote by Benjamin Franklin that says “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I will learn.”
