Meet Julia Lucius! An LA-based girl with a mega voice you probably haven’t heard of yet, but that's about to change. You're about to feel like you're in on a secret you can’t keep to yourself when it comes to her brand new single named “Something I Said”. Julia’s music finds its home between two unlikely genres that have caused her to coin the term disco-country to describe her sound.

The new single is the honest and bright soundtrack you need to listen to when strolling through Spring. It feels like a perfect desert road trip; windows down, staring at the mountains passing one by one. The track's narrative is sure to reach into your heart and play on heartstrings that may have been untouched through this past year. It is a track written out of the overthinking that tends to happen after someone ghosts you like their last name was Boo. It sums up the emotions that many have felt at some point - whether it’s outside a movie theater, sitting in a restaurant until the server brings you sympathy desert, or just never getting the text that they are waiting for. It can be challenging - not to wonder if it was something you said that made them decide to ghost. Lucky for you, if this ever happens at least now you know the perfect song to blast on the way home!

Julia’s vocals are a stunning mix of soft country and pop that build slowly throughout the track bringing a breezy quality to the song as a whole. The backing track helps to tell you how to feel throughout the single without being overbearing or in the way.

As a whole get ready to find the newest addition to your Spring playlists with “Something I Said” out now. Get to know Julia a bit better below as she talks about why she makes music, authenticity, and what she hopes you take away from “Something I Said”.

Who are you?

Hi! I am a twenty-three-year-old singer/songwriter from Los Angeles. I started writing music when I was about 6, and haven’t really ever stopped. It was the only way I knew how to process life and the trials I experienced. I was bullied throughout middle school and was an incredibly shy kid, so most of my early childhood I wouldn’t sing for anyone. Obviously, I have grown out of that, but I still tend to be more introverted by nature. I went to school at the University of Southern California to study songwriting in their popular music program and graduated last year. I love animals— goats and dogs in particular— and belting show tunes when I’m home alone.

Why music?

Music is the only thing that makes life make sense. It is the way I process emotions, ideas, anxious thought-spirals (if you know, you know). When I write or sing, I go into a flow state that allows me to be completely present and detach from the heaviness of life.

How does it feel releasing this single compared to others?

This single is a really exciting release for me. It is the first song of mine that really captures who I want to be as an artist and what I want to say. It is more pop-leaning than the songs I have released prior to this one, but it feels the most “me” compared to anything out so far. I am so excited for fans to hear it.

What does vulnerability as an artist mean to you?

Vulnerability is one of the most important things an artist can display when making music. In the public eye vulnerability can be scary, but I have found the more vulnerable I am and the less I care about what others think, the more I connect with listeners. The most rewarding thing as an artist is getting messages from fans who resonate and relate to the stories I tell.

What do you hope people take away from this single?

I hope people use this single as an excuse to blast the radio and dance like crazy people in their rooms.

What does authenticity mean to you?

I’m so glad you brought up authenticity. I would have touched on it regardless because of how important it is to me. I think the easiest route to happiness is living an authentic life. Feeling myself and staying true to my character is my biggest focus as an artist and songwriter. I think if everyone were to be themselves and accept that some people will love you, others won’t and that’s okay, we would all be a little more at peace.

What does home mean to you?

Because I moved a lot growing up (22 times and counting), I have found that my family and those I love have become my home. I don’t get attached to places or things, rather, I find warmth and familiarity in people. I am pretty good with handling change because of this too. For me, home is a state of being, not a physical place.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

Oh boy, this is a hard one. I grew up on a lot of disco, country, and big band jazz. I also listened to a lot of CCR, Fleetwood Mac, and other great 70s rock bands. As for current inspirations, I adore Maggie Rogers, Léon and Ingrid Andress. Kacey Musgraves is another artist I really love.

What is your relationship with Los Angeles today? Has it been a journey to get there?

I’m going to be honest, Los Angeles was a hard city to get used to. I grew up with a lot of room to roam and not a whole lot monetarily. At one point, we were eating spaghetti 5 nights a week and lived in a trailer at an RV park. Los Angeles is almost the opposite of that. It can feel a bit flashy at times and I felt pretty isolated at first. I had to find my people and make the city feel like home. I have completely fallen in love with L.A. and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

What gets you through the hard days?

Music—  writing in particular. I find that when I get into writing a good song, everything else melts away and it is just me, the song and the music. It is my form of mindfulness. Also calling my Grandma, that will always do the trick.

If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?

I would be on a houseboat on Don Pedro, a little lake in Northern California that I grew up going to. It was always the best vacation as a kid, I really love being on the water. Also, Barcelona, holy cow that city is gorgeous and the energy is like no other.

 What’s next?

More music! I have an EP finished, it’s just a matter of releasing it. I am so beyond proud of it and can’t wait for you guys to hear it. :~)
