Falling

Falling-

You stand on the edge of a cliff stiffly -  the ocean below you breaking itself against the rocks spraying a fine mist of doubt into the air. You stare at the daydream of a horizon and hold in a scream of frustration due to the fear flowing through you. The need for control clouding your vision. You walk backwards, preparing, evaluating the risks, taking time to enjoy the view from this high up. In a split second it happens - that moment where the part of your brain that you are unaware of decides it’s time to jump. Without logic’s consent your back foot lifts and all of a sudden you are moving forward faster than you moved back. That logical part of you is screaming and covering its eyes because the drop is long and the water an unknown temperature. A breath - maybe two and then you are at the point of no return - you feel toes curl around the edge clinging to the safety of the known but that’s inconsequential now. You are falling - all you can do is control how you fall - to make the choice to fall with grace and enjoy the change in perspective as your relation to the horizon changes with each blink. The fall seems infinite, the wind roaring in your ears, you forget that the water is coming, you forget that this will end, adrenaline keeping your heart beating in time. Between blinks the world goes quiet and dark - peaceful and hectic all at once. The temperature of the water is known. You survived the fall - but you are not the same. The tide pushes your body towards a shore of new ideals… Sometime later you forget how scary it all was.. Until - you find yourself back on a cliff's edge once again - staring into a new set of unknown waters. This time you jump sooner and once again find yourself…
